10 Clowns That Will Haunt Your Nightmares

According to Wikipedia the definition of a clown is a "comic performer who employs slapstick or similar types of physical comedy, often in a mime style." That may very well be the standard definition, but a more relevant definition would be "walking nightmare." Get ready to feel creeped out for the rest of your life after reading our carefully selected list of the top ten creepiest clowns (fictional, or otherwise).
1
Pogo The Clown
John Wayne Gacy, the infamous serial killer who took the lives of at least 33 young men in Cook County, Illinois between the years 1972 and 1978, would often dress as a clown named Pogo for children's parties and charitable events throughout Illinois. Looking at the picture above with a clear understanding of who the man behind the makeup was, you can see why we put Pogo at the top of this list. Terrifying isn't even a strong enough word here.
2
Twisty The Clown
If you're caught up on your American Horror Story seasons then you may recognize Twisty (played by John Carroll Lynch) from "Freak Show." It's hard to imagine anything being creepier than the image above, unless you know what's behind that mask.

This is dedicated to the wave of neighborhood creepy clowns who suddenly started popping up in various locations over the past few years. You've probably come across an article or two about this, right? Maybe there's even been one reported in your own town? Maybe you're a neighborhood creepy clown yourself? Well, stop it. No one needs this in their lives when they're just trying to go to Starbucks.

Rebo the Clown (AKA Bev Bergeron) was a famous clown and magician in the 50s and 60s, and was a key feature in the show The Magic of Alakazam. Many consider Rebo to be one of the most beloved clowns in history but that doesn't make him any less horrifying.
5
Bozo The Clown

The Bozo Show aired on WGN-TV in Chicago for nearly 40 years and is, to this day, considered one of the most popular children's shows in history. The television franchise came to an end in 2001 when it could no longer compete with the influx of modern children's programming. On December 24, 2005 Bozo returned with a two-hour special called Bozo, Gar & Ray: WGN TV Classics, which re-runs during the holidays to this day. All that being said ... still terrifying.
6
Pennywise
Pennywise is the mascot for all the bad stuff that takes place in Stephen King's classic 1986 novel, IT. The book was made into a TV mini-series in 1990 starring Tim Curry as the evil clown. In the 2017 film adaptation, Pennywise is portrayed by Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård. Hard to tell which actor pulled off the incredible feat of bringing Pennywise to life best, but it's all the same level of frightening.
7
He Who Gets Slapped
Wikipedia
He Who Gets Slapped is a 1924 American silent drama film starring Lon Chaney, as a down on his luck scientist who takes on a job as a clown. Each performance consists of him being slapped in the face over and over, which makes this both scary AND sad.
8
The Poltergeist Clown
This scene from the classic 1984 horror film about a family being driven to the point of madness by a poltergeist in their home says it all.
9
Buffo - The World's Strongest Clown
Mixing physical strength with other clown stuff doesn't make clowns any less scary. Quite the opposite actually.
10
Grandma The Clown

Grandma the Clown was a character created by Barry Lubin for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus starting in 1975. In 1982, "Grandma" joined the Big Apple Circus and became the attraction's most popular character. In 2002, Lubin was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame which is, apparently, a thing
