This is the reason most of the students and their parents are preferring to get admission in any of the Indian Institute of Technology which are located in many places across the world such as Mumbai, Patna, Varanasi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Kharagpur, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Indore, Chennai, Dhanbad, Delhi and Hyderabad. IIT is not just an educational program intended to produce future engineers. But, there is much more s much more to IIT and IITians than engineering. There are a lot of IITians who dared to sacrifice their dear IIT degrees in order to fulfill their dreams. Here’s a list of few IITians who followed their passions and contributed to the development of India.
1. Raju Narayana Swamy: IITian to IAS officer – Most Truthful Person Ever!
Raju Narayana Swami is a Computer Science graduate from IIT Madras who secured first place in the secondary state examination, plus two, pre-degree examination, GATE, and even topped the IAS entrance test. He even declined the scholarship offer from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
He then stepped towards his dream to become an IAS officer and fight against corruption for the people of this country ever since. He is the most truthful person ever and didn’t even spare his father-in-law, who was a contractor, which led to his divorce.
2. Jairam Ramesh: Indian Economist
Jairam Ramesh is the former Indian Minister of Environment and Forests who graduated from IIT-Bombay in the year 1975 with a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then studied technology policy, economics, engineering, and management at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Ramesh has been a columnist for the Business Standard, Business Today, The Telegraph, Times of India and India Today.
With over 30 years of experience in economic and development policy, Jairam officially joined the All India National Congress on a full-time basis in 1998. He is the founding member of the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad. Being an IITian from a reputed institution, he stepped into Politics and is contributing for the development of the country.
3. Arvind Kejriwal: Prominent Social Activist and CM of Delhi (Present)
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician who is regarded as one of the prominent social activists. For the last two-three years, he has been a household name who inspired every Indian with his integrity and reverence towards the nation. He is an IIT Kharagpur alumni with a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Some of the esteemed channels like NDTV and CNN-IBN declared Kejriwal as the Indian of the year. Kejriwal was the second choice for Prime Minister after Narendra Modi. At present, he is the Chief Minister of Delhi continuously for the second term.
4. Chetan Bhagat: Famous Author, Columnist, Screenwriter,….
Chetan Bhagat, who don’t require an introduction. He is a popular author, Screenwriter, columnist, and many more. Chetan Bhagat graduated from IIT-Delhi with a B.tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then took up a management program offered at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. He published his first novel ‘Five Point Someone’ in 2004 which led him to a significant place with fame and popularity in India.
He’s not only an author but also, writes columns in newspapers on various social and national issues. He also found a place in Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential Person’ in 2010. Being a graduate from IIT Delhi, he sacrificed his degree and moved towards his passion and became a most successful person.
5. Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal: Founders of Flipkart
Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal graduated with a degree in Computer Science Engineering from IIT-Delhi and became the founders of Flipkart, which is the popular E-Commerce Website. Sachin Bansal worked for Amazon.com and in the year 2007, he left his job to establish Flipkart along with his brother Binny who then was working for Sarnoff Corporation joined him.
Initially, they started with selling books and expanded later offering a wide variety of goods in a massive range. They even implemented the popular ‘Cash on Delivery’ facility which every shopping website in India following the e-commerce site, Flipkart. The two IIT graduates has completely changed the E-commerce industry in India although coming from an IIT background.
6. N.R.Narayan Murthy: Father of Indian IT sector
N.R. Narayan Murthy is an Electrical Engineer from the University of Mysore and then pursued M.tech from IIT Kanpur. Narayan Murthy founded Infosys, which is now one of India’s leading MNC, in the year 1981.
Murthy has been described as the ‘Father of Indian IT sector’ by Time magazine due to his significant contribution to outsourcing in India and is also listed among the top 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time. He has been honored with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards.
7. Arunabh Kumar: Founder of TVF (The Viral Fever)
Arunabh Kumar is an Electrical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur who started The Viral Fever in 2010 when he uploaded a video on YouTube which went viral on the social media and fetched 18k likes in a day. Moreover, the video went on to become the second most viewed video in entertainment category that week.
Within a short time, Arunabh Kumar became the incumbent CEO (Chief Experiment Officer) of The Viral Fever Media Labs. Now with over 1 million subscribers on YouTube, his story is oblivion than a fusion of inspiration and determination to follow your passion. Over the last two years, The Viral Fever has created kick-ass spoofs that have been doing rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and many other social media platforms.
8. Manohar Parrikar: Best Defence Ministers of India
The current Defence Minister of India, Manohar Parrikar is a graduate from IIT Bombay in Metallurgical Engineering in the year 1978. He became the first IIT graduate to be appointed as the Chief Minister of any Indian state when he served as the CM of Goa from 2000-2005.
Manohar Parrikar was sworn-in for the all-important Defence Minister post in November 2014. He is regarded as one of the best defence ministers that India ever had!
9. Rahul Ram: Lead singer and Bassist of Indian Ocean
Rahul Ram is one of the top bassists in India who plays bass guitar for the Indian Ocean, the musical band he joined in the year 1991. He is an IITian who secured an M.Sc degree in Chemistry from IIT Kanpur and a Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Cornell. Though, he went against the flow to follow his passion of becoming a bassist. During his childhood, he always enjoyed playing bass guitar from school and performing in events.
Rahul has composed songs and sung for many appreciated-by-critics movies including Gulaal, Peepli Live, and Black Friday. Today, Rahul Ram is a well-known bass guitarist and vocalist of Indian Ocean across the nation, which is the country’s first and arguably most original rock band. Being a social activist, he played an active role during Narmada Bachao Andolan (1990-1995).
10. Pichai Sundararajan: First Non-White CEO of Google
Pichai Sundararajan who is popularly known as Sundar Pichai, is a technology executive who is Product Chief at Google Inc. Pichai was announced as the next Chief Executive Officer of Google on August 10, 2015. Pichai earned his degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) in Metallurgical Engineering.
Pichai started at Google in 2004 working on the search toolbar that the company puts in Internet browsers. Pichai eventually spearheaded the creation of Chrome, which has surpassed Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as the most popular browser in the U.S.
11. Nandan Nilekani: Former Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India
Nandan Nilekani graduated from IIT-Bombay with a B.tech degree in Electrical Engineering who then co-founded Infosys along with Narayana Murthy and worked in the company for 28 years. In 2009, he left Infosys and served as the Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India under the former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Nandan Nilekani was honored with a Padma Bhushan Award and he was listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world both in 2006 and 2009 by the Time magazine. Nandan Nilekani is an Indian entrepreneur, bureaucrat and politician.
12. Nitin Gupta: Rivaldo Stand-up Comedian
Nitin Gupta graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Chemical Engineering and is popularly known as Rivaldo. He has been actively trying to get Standup Comedy a respectable position in India and began Entertainment Engineers as one of the most important steps toward pioneering a humor renaissance.
Nitin has performed at various college festivals in the country including IITs, IIMs, and alumni meets conducted by them. He also has proved his mettle in corporate events of many big companies and done a number of shows as well.
There are many others who have passed out of IIT and are doing very well in their lives. All these people sacrificed their prestigious degree and turned towards fulfilling their dreams and passion contributing for the development of the country making both IIT and India proud
